What is the Extension file property?

The file extension is the last part of the filename after a full stop (if there is one). For example filename: "readme.txt" extension: "txt". The extension shows which type of file it is. Windows keeps a list of file extensions and their file types, and uses the list to choose which application to use to open the file. Windows gets the "type" file property from the file extension.

Extension is a file property in a category we call File information.

We call file information properties properties that all files have, such as "Size" and "Date Created".

Uses for the Extension file property

Make a list of windows applications

To make a list of which Windows application is associated with different file types, you could copy files into a folder, or a flash drive, with the file extensions for the file types. Then, list the files in DDFileCatcher with the file properties "Extension" and "Application Name" selected. The files could be dummy files, for example empty text files, with the extension changed to the ones you want. This method could be used to do an inventory of which applications are installed on a company's computers.

Windows explorer hides file extensions

There is a setting in Windows Explorer to hide extensions for known file types. If set, the filename "readme.txt", for example, appears at "readme". In Windows XP, the setting is in "Folder Options | View tab |Advanced Settings".
